BIDDEFORD, Maine – Despite the University of New England nearly erasing an 11-point second-half deficit, trailing by only two in the final minute, Dean College was able to knock down enough free throws and come away with the necessary defensive stops to escape with an 80-75 non-conference men's basketball victory Tuesday evening on Coach Beaudry's Court.
Adam Lux had the hot hand for the Nor'easters (3-4), going 8-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-6 from deep to lead all scorers with 24. Lux also finished with 10 rebounds to complete his third consecutive double-double. Dean (4-2) was led by Christian Yeates' 18 points, along with Randy Vasquez's 14-point, 10-board double-double.
Jaelen Jackson scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, where he was instrumental in the Nor'easters late push. With UNE trailing 77-70 with fewer than three minutes remaining, a 5-0 run – each of those points scored by Jackson – had the Bulldogs clinging to a two-point edge with under a minute left. Nasar Motley knocked down two crucial free throws in response, and Dean then delivered a defensive stop, effectively sealing the victory.
Despite the loss, UNE was more efficient from the floor, going 30-for-66 to Dean's 29-for-72, but was hampered by a 17-10 turnover margin in favor of the Bulldogs. Dean held a slight rebounding edge as well, 42-40.
Dean's nine-point halftime lead (40-31) was its largest of the evening to that point, with the Bulldogs taking advantage of UNE's cold start from the perimeter. The Nor'easters hit just four of their 17 attempts from beyond the arc in the first half, but were only looking at a 36-31 deficit in the final minute before the break until Dean ended the half with back-to-back buckets.
The Bulldogs' lead grew as large as 14 in the second half before the Nor'easters chipped away and eventually came within one possession at the 3:31 mark with
Jayden Thornton's breakaway layup. The Bulldogs were sent to the line on two straight trips after that, knocking down each of their freebies to create separation, before weathering UNE's Jackson-powered 5-0 spurt. The Bulldogs, finishing the game 17-for-20 from the free throw line, hit nine of their 11 second-half attempts.
The Nor'easters three-game homestand continues Sunday, Nov. 30 with UMaine Augusta visiting Coach Beaudry's Court at 1 p.m.
