PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- The University of New England held off a second-half charge by Plymouth State University to earn a 92-84 wire-to-wire victory in non-conference men's basketball action Thursday evening (Nov. 20) at Foley Gymnasium.
The win was the 300th career positive decision for Nor'easter head coach
Ed Silva, who is in his 14th season at UNE and 25th overall after starting his career at Elms College.
Adam Lux led five UNE players in double figures with 24 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his 10th career double-double.
Jayden Thornton followed with 19 points, which included three treys and a 6-for-7 showing at the free throw line.
Jaelen Jackson flirted with a triple-double (15 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists), while
Adrian Torres and
Dylan Crowley tallied 13 apiece. Torres racked up six boards and four helpers to aid the winning effort.
Keegan Martinez scored a team-high 20 points to pace the Panthers. Yansel Reyes had 19, and Asante Aurora tallied 14.
After scoring the game's initial 10 points, UNE built a lead as large as 11 (28-17) in the first half before settling for a three-point margin (40-37) heading into intermission. The Nor'easters featured a balanced scoring attack in the opening 20 minutes, with Torres leading the way, scoring nine points.
The Nor'easters forged a 13-point advantage (59-46) seven minutes into the second half before Plymouth State began to chip away at its deficit. The Panthers were able to close within two (64-62), but UNE never surrendered its advantage.
UNE overcame 22 turnovers by shooting an impressive 51.6 percent (32 for 62) from the floor for the contest, including 40.9 percent (9 of 22) efficiency from beyond the arc. The Nor'easters' scoring output of 92 points eclipsed their previous season high by 15 (77 in a season-opening win over Maine Maritime).
The Nor'easters (2-3) conclude their busy week when they travel to Henniker, N.H. Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-conference battle with New England College.
