Huskies top Nor'easters in season opener, 76-58

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine pulled away in the second half for a 76-58 win over the University of New England women's basketball team in the 2025-26 season opener on Wednesday evening at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium.
 
Lucy Wiles poured in a game-high 24 points for the Huskies, narrowly outdoing Sydney Jenisch, who was a point shy from matching her career-best with 23 for the Nor'easters.
 
UNE faced a 22-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter before finding its footing offensively in the second, scoring 20 points to trim the halftime deficit to 35-27. The Huskies maintained a lead of at least six throughout the third quarter and eventually capped off a 14-2 run early in the fourth with two of Wiles' 13 fourth-quarter points to open up its largest lead of the day, 58-40.
 
Dakota Shipley, in addition to her game-high eight rebounds, was one of two from USM to finish with 18 points, joining Jaycie Christopher. Maddy Werner scored 10 for UNE as the only other Nor'easter in double figures aside from Jenisch.
 
Both sides were nearly identical from beyond the arc, with Southern Maine going 9-for-22 and UNE shooting at an 8-for-22 clip. The leading scorers led those respective charges – Wiles was 3-for-5 from deep and Jenisch was 4-for-9. The Nor'easters were 1-for-8 during a cold-shooting first quarter, but warmed to go 7-for-14 the rest of the way.
 
The Huskies held a 38-28 advantage in the rebounding column.
 
UNE is in action on Coach Beaudry's Court for the home opener on Monday, Nov. 17, hosting Clark University at 6 p.m.
