GORHAM, Maine – A dominant first half from the University of Southern Maine carried the Huskies to a comfortable 97-62 men's basketball victory over the University of New England inside Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
USM (1-0) had four scorers in double figures, led by 25 from Thomas Whelan, who was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Evans Sterling put up 16, while Gabe Lash and Carter Galley contributed 12 and 10, respectively.
Adrian Torres led UNE (1-1) with 15 points, followed by
Kha Cao Ra James' 13. James also pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
The Nor'easters were hindered by a 4-for-24 showing from the perimeter, while the Huskies nearly shot 50 percent (12-for-26).
USM was 21-of-35 during its hot-shooting start, eventually racing to a 55-29 halftime lead with the help of a 23-6 run that turned an early 15-10 advantage into a 38-16 lead.
The Nor'easters are in action at home for the first time in the 2025-26 campaign, hosting Bowdoin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 for their Coach Beaudry/St. Francis College Tip-Off game.
