WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of New England men's soccer team notched its second straight victory, defeating Thomas College by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
UNE (2-5-3) scored twice in exactly four minutes late in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime, and despite a Terriers goal in the 80th minute, held on for the nonconference triumph.
Nick Reffel netted his second goal in as many games off of a free kick in the 31st minute. Just moments later, a throw-in from
Ethan Berry found the head of
Corbin Schreindorfer before
Zade Tincher headed it home for his first career goal.
Sean MacDonald made six total saves, including four in the opening 18 minutes, to keep the Terriers (7-5) off the board until a late-game penalty kick opportunity, which Mickey Woodrow converted with just over 10 minutes remaining. Thomas had one final opportunity to post the equalizer in the 85th minute, but was turned away by MacDonald.
Shots on goal narrowly sided with the Terriers, 7-6, and total shots were even at 13 apiece. Thomas received three more corner kicks than UNE, 7-4.
The Nor'easters will return to Conference of New England action on Wednesday, Oct. 8, hosting Hartford for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
