MILTON, Mass. -- First-year
Emily Talbot broke a scoreless tie with pair of goals in a span of 3:52 midway through the second half to give the University of New England women's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Curry College in a Conference of New England tilt Saturday (Oct. 25) at Walter Katz Field.
Despite dominating play in the opening half, the Nor'easters (11-4-3, 5-2-2 CNE) were unable to convert and had to settle for a 0-0 scoreboard heading into intermission. UNE out-shot the Colonels by a 19-1 margin in the first frame.
Talbot broke the deadlock in the 68th minute for an advantage that would hold. The rookie midfielder provided an insurance tally less than four minutes later for the Nor'easters, who racked up a decided advantage in shots (33-5) and corner kicks (11-1) for the match.
Haley Coombs needed just a pair of saves to register her fifth shutout of the season.  She also was credited with an assist on Talbot's first score of the match.
Lexi Smardon had a busy game for Curry (4-8-5, 1-5-3), totaling 21 stops.
The victory clinched a playoff berth for the Nor'easters, who will conclude the regular season Tuesday (Oct. 28), when they host Gordon College at 4 p.m.
