UNE takes control early, dominates Wentworth

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's soccer team erupted for five-first half goals on its way to a convincing 7-0 Conference of New England victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology on a foggy Wednesday night at Blue Storm Stadium.

Karley Belisle and Emily Talbot were responsible for two goals apiece, and Belisle added two assists to go along with those tallies. Gillian McGee recorded a team-high three assists in addition to a goal. Also factoring in Jill Hodgson's goal – the last of the evening – UNE first-years (Talbot, McGee and Hodgson) combined for four goals and three assists.

Seven goals were the most by UNE against a conference opponent since Sept. 10, 2011, a 7-1 win over Curry.

The Nor'easters (10-4-3, 4-2-2) were on the board by the ninth minute, with Belisle's strike following a corner kick opening the scoring (Watch). Fewer than three minutes later, McGee extended the lead in the 11th minute (Watch), and Talbot tacked on another in the 16th to cap off UNE's early first-half barrage (Watch).

Belisle put up her second of the night in the 33rd minute (Watch) before Marah Walton posted the fifth just 48 seconds later (Watch). Talbot (Watch) and Hodgson (Watch) had the two second-half goals less than five minutes apart, starting with Talbot's in the 56th minute.

Wentworth (7-4-6, 2-4-2), which was peppered with 14 shots on goal, looked for answers from two different goalkeepers. Shyla Kulesza made four saves in the first half and Claire Reif had two in the second.

The Nor'easters, having locked up their eighth shutout of the season, received two saves from starting keeper Haley Coombs before Anna Flaherty subbed in midway through the second half and made one save.

UNE is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25 and 4:30 p.m. with a trip to Curry before returning home to host Gordon for the regular-season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
