PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales scored just 35 seconds into Saturday afternoon's Conference of New England showdown and held on in the second half for a 2-1 victory over the University of New England women's soccer team at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
With the Nor'easters (9-4-3, 6-2-0) trailing 2-0,
Karley Belisle netted the visitors' lone goal in the 60th minute, heading a well-placed service from
Gillian McGee. UNE's only shot on goal after that tally was turned away by Kyla Stamilio, who finished the game with six saves.
Sophia Warburton put the first-place Wildcats (8-7-1, 6-2-0) on the board during the opening minute, and it took more than 50 minutes, but JWU's lead grew in the 53rd with Kylie Schmidt's tally.
Despite shots on goal being even (7-7), the Wildcats held a 21-9 advantage in total shots, plus an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
With the postseason push intensifying, the Nor'easters will play two of their last three regular-season contests at home, beginning with Wentworth on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
