BEVERLY, Mass. – After trailing by as many as 15 in the second quarter, Endicott found its footing late in Tuesday night's Conference of New England clash to come away with a 58-50 victory over the University of New England women's basketball team inside MacDonald Gymnasium.
Sarah Dempsey poured in a game-high 30 points, including 10 in both the third and fourth quarters, to help the Gulls (9-3, 5-0 CNE) recover from their nine-point halftime deficit and take the lead late in the third quarter before using a 10-1 fourth-quarter run to pull away from UNE (6-6, 3-2 CNE) in the contest's final moments.
Dempsey also racked up 15 rebounds to record the game's only double-double. Emma Shinney was another catalyst for the Gulls, tallying 17 points with eight boards and a game-high seven assists.
Sydney Jenisch, who was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, paced the Nor'easters with 15 points.
Gabby Soter scored each of her 10 points in the first quarter, which saw UNE race to a 19-9 lead. Soter was 3-for-3 from the field during the stanza, helping the Nor'easters shoot better than 50 percent (7-for-13) during their dominant start. UNE, having scored the first five points of the second quarter behind a Jenisch triple and a
Kaia Anderson layup, opened up the game's largest lead, 24-9, by the 7:00 mark.
After the Gulls battled back to cut the lead to single digits before halftime, Jenisch connected on her second 3-pointer of the game to hand UNE a 31-19 advantage on its first possession of the third quarter. Endicott, powered by Dempsey, chipped away to eventually tie the game, 36-36, shortly before taking its first lead since the game's opening minutes when Dempsey knocked down a pair of three throws at the 1:17 mark of the third.
Faye Veilleux, who finished with 11 points, scored the final points of the frame to bring the Nor'easters even, 38-38.
Grace Boucher delivered a crucial bucket for UNE with less the six minutes remaining in the fourth, beating a defender off the dribble and driving in for a layup to hand the Nor'easters a 42-40 advantage, but Dempsey had the answer on the other end with her only 3-point attempt of the night. UNE was unable to regain the lead as the Gulls found answers down low and at the charity stripe in the waning minutes.
The Nor'easters head home, where they're 2-0 in conference action, to host Roger Williams on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
