Nor'easters topple Wentworth to earn 76-45 CNE win

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Faye Veilleux connected on 9 of 12 field goal attempts and led all players with 22 points to help power the University of New England women's basketball team to a 76-45 wire-to-wire victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Conference of New England (CNE) action Wednesday evening (Jan. 22) at Coach Beaudry's court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

After the Nor'easters came out of halftime leading 44-21, Veilleux poured in 10 points in the third quarter to thwart any thought of a Wentworth comeback. Veilleux finished a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, as well as at the foul line.

UNE received 38 points from its bench, including season-high efforts from Jaylyn Bartolome (12) and Ella Karavanic (11). Bartolome knocked down a pair of shots from distance, while Karanavic was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Kaia Anderson had a game-high eight rebounds for the Nor'easters (9-7, 6-3 CNE), and Sydney Jenisch handed out a game-best six assists.

For Wentworth (2-14, 0-9), Maddy Foster scored 12 points, including the 1,000th of her career. The senior from Lewiston became the 12th player in Leopard history to reach the milestone on a bucket with just under five minutes remaining. Brianna Carroll added 11 points and a pair of steals for the visitors.

The Nor'easters dominated from the outset, holding Wentworth scoreless over the opening 6:47 to build a 12-0 advantage. The Leopards were limited to just 2 of 12 shooting from the floor in the initial 10 minutes.

UNE would shoot 60 percent (9 of 15) from the floor, including a 3-for-5 effort from distance, to rack up 27 second-quarter points. A jumper by Mia Arcario just before the halftime buzzer capped the scoring outburst.

The hosts steadily pulled away after halftime and eventually grabbed their largest lead of the evening (32, 73-41) on a layup by Bartolome with 3:39 remaining in the contest.

Winners of three consecutive CNE contests, the Nor'easters will look to make it four in-a-row Saturday when they host the University of Hartford at 1 p.m. UNE suffered a 61-58 road setback to the Hawks on Dec. 7.
