Statistics

DUDLEY, Mass. – Sydney Jenisch's career-high 24 points boosted the University of New England women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as the Nor'easters turned in a season-best scoring effort to earn an 87-71 Conference of New England victory at Nichols.

Jenisch was joined by four other Nor'easters in double figures, including Faye Veilleux, who scored nine of her 14 points during the first quarter as UNE (8-7, 5-3 CNE) was able to build an early lead. Maddy Werner, coming off a career-high 17 points in a win at Curry, scored 16 in 19 minutes of action. Gabby Soter rounded out the quartet with 11, hitting each of her eight attempts at the free throw line. Adriana Romano and Alyvia Smith scored 16 apiece to pace the Bison (10-5, 3-5 CNE), who were held under 80 points for just the fifth time this season.

UNE had a decisive advantage at the charity stripe, having made 24-of-31 at the line to Nichols' 12-for-19 showing. Rebounding was another factor in the Nor'easters' victory, having outdone the Bison on the boards by a margin of 49-36.

UNE, which hasn't trailed in either of its last two games following Saturday's win, needed just over seven minutes of play to build a double-digit lead, rolling to a 21-11 advantage a the 2:44 mark of the first with Veilleux knocking down a pair of three throws. The Nor'easters entered the second quarter on top 24-15, but led by as many as 15 during the stanza with a 10-0 run that was capped off by one of Jenisch's three triples on the day.

Werner was key in the third quarter, scoring 13 of UNE's 24 total points and shooting 6-for-9 from the field. UNE began to put the game away down the stretch in the third, eventually grabbing a 20-point lead when one of Werner's buckets hiked the score to 60-40 midway through the frame. 69-44, which came after Grace Boucher nailed a 3-pointer late in the third, marked the largest lead of the afternoon.

Riding the momentum of consecutive road wins, UNE returns to the Harold Alfond Forum on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to host Wentworth at 5:30 p.m.
