Statistics

MILTON, Mass. – The University of New England women's basketball team started strong and pulled away from Curry late in Wednesday evening's Conference of New England tilt inside Katz Gymnasium to close out a 77-62 road victory.

The Nor'easters (7-7, 4-3 CNE) raced to a 19-3 lead during the first quarter, and later when clinging to a 51-47 advantage in the fourth, used an 11-2 run to close the door on the Colonels' comeback. First-year Maddy Werner paced UNE with career-high 17 points, while Lauren Dunn netted a game-high 21 for Curry (5-9, 2-5 CNE)

With 15 points in the game, graduate student Faye Veilleux surpassed 1,000 in her collegiate career. Veilleux began her career at Division III UMass Dartmouth, where she scored 111 points in two seasons, before transferring to the University of New England. Veilleux's UNE point total stands at 890.

Sydney Jenisch joined Werner and Veilleux in double figures with 13 points. Grace Boucher went 7-for-8 from the free throw line, all in the fourth quarter, to help the Nor'easters outpace the Colonels 26-19 during the final frame. Sophie Hilbrunner grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 14 points for Curry, which outrebounded UNE by a margin of 36-34, but also committed 27 turnovers to UNE's 13.

A Kylie McCarthy 3-pointer brought the score to 51-47 in favor UNE early in the fourth quarter, making Curry's deficit the smallest it had been since 4-0 in the game's opening minutes. After Jenisch and Hilbrunner traded buckets, Jenisch remained hot with a made jumper before knocking down a pair of free throws. Veilleux went to the line after a Curry turnover and was good on both, putting the Nor'easters back on top by double digits, 59-49, with less than five minutes to go. With 2:20 remaining, a jumper from the right elbow allowed Veilleux to clear the 1,000-point plateau.

Wednesday night's win gave the Nor'easters their 10th straight over the Colonels. The streak dates back to the 2018-19 season.

UNE is on the road once again on Saturday, Jan. 18, facing Nichols at 1 p.m.
