MILTON, Mass. –
Jack Pyzynski dropped 26 points, the highest single-game total of his UNE career, during Wednesday night's Conference of New England battle to help the University of New England men's basketball team catch fire and cruise to a convincing 93-76 win over Curry inside Katz Gymnasium.
Pyzynski, the game's leading scorer, was aided by
Adam Lux's 21 points. Those two represented less than half of the Nor'easters' double-digit scorers as
Zach Boulay netted 13, and
Henry Stewart and
Jaelen Jackson notched 12 apiece. The Nor'easters (5-9, 3-4 CNE) shot 56.3 percent from the field (36-of-64) and 53.1 percent from beyond the arc (17-of-32), both of which were season bests.
17 made 3-pointers were the most by UNE since the Nor'easters blitzed Curry with 21 (21-for-55) in a 139-104 victory on Jan. 30, 2019. Pyzynski and Lux led the long-range attack on Wednesday night, both shooting 4-for-8 from deep. Boulay, Stewart, Jackson and
Zach Federico each knocked down a pair of triples, and
Connor Curcio was good on his lone 3-point attempt of the night.
Curry (2-12, 1-6 CNE) had four scorers in double figures, led by 19 from Okeke Favour, who nailed a game-high five triples.
Stewart, having made his first collegiate start, knocked down a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game to set the tone for a dominant first half. The Nor'easters scored the game's first 11 points, eventually roaring to a 19-3 lead. The visitors opened up a 45-24 lead, their largest of the first half, when Pyzynski made his second 3-pointer of the night with 1:25 remaining until halftime. UNE went into the break with a 45-30 advantage after shooting better than 58 percent (17-for-29) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, all while holding the Colonels to 10-for-30.
The Nor'easters hot shooting didn't stop in the second half, though Curry warmed up to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor (19-for-37). It wasn't enough for the Colonels to come within single digits at any point, despite a 10-1 run that trimmed UNE's lead to 58-47 midway through the half, which the Nor'easters promptly answered with a 15-6 run to reclaim a 20-point advantage. A 93-66 UNE advantage after Boulay's layup with under two minutes remaining would serve as the game's largest lead.
Wednesday night's win was the Nor'easters' first over the Colonels since the 2021-22 season.
UNE is back on the road Saturday, Jan. 18, lined up to take on Nichols at 3:30 p.m.
