GORHAM, Maine — The University of Southern Maine had a three-goal cushion with 30 minutes to play but needed to hang on late for a 4-3 result against the University of New England women's soccer team on Wednesday at Hannaford Field.
The Huskies (2-0-0) -- the two-time defending Little East Conference champions -- scored each of their four goals within a 12-minute span during the first half, beginning with Julia McKenna's in the sixth minute and finishing with Catriona Gould's 17th-minute penalty kick.
Tori Keyes helped UNE (1-2-0) weather that storm with her first goal of the afternoon, which came in the 13th minute.
First-year
Marah Walton gave UNE the boost it needed in the 62nd minute, scoring her first collegiate goal to cut the lead to 4-2. Junior goalkeeper
Anna Flaherty, who totaled seven saves for a second straight game, stopped three on-target Husky shots while the Nor'easters faced the two-score deficit.
With a yellow card issued to Southern Maine's Kiaya Gatchell, Keyes lined up for a penalty kick and snuck one past Husky keeper Madi Jordan at the right post. Then looking to tie the game, the Nor'easters took a corner kick in the 88th minute, but were unable to put a shot on goal in what would prove to be their final scoring opportunity.
Keyes, recently named the Conference of New England's Offensive Player of the Week, now has back-to-back two-goal performances to her credit, having scored twice at Maine Maritime on Sunday. The senior has five goals through three games in the 2024 season.
UNE returns home on Sunday, Sept. 8 to face Westfield State at 2 p.m.
