BIDDEFORD, Maine — Two early Bowdoin College goals were too much for the University of New England men's soccer team to overcome in a 2-1 result on Tuesday night at Hazard Field.
The Polar Bears (1-0-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with Jack Banks' goal, and extended that lead in the 28th minute with Ronaldo Cabral's tally. Bowdoin, the NESCAC's leader in goals per game a season ago, was kept off the board for the remainder of the contest by
Sean McCarthy, though, who totaled six saves in his first action of the season.
UNE (1-1-1) drew within striking distance after first-year
Haukur Karlsson converted a penalty kick past Bowdoin keeper Alex Ainsworth in the 76th minute for the first collegiate score of his career. Neither side put a shot on goal during the final 10 minutes as time expired on UNE's comeback bid.
The Nor'easters are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Southern Maine for a noon kickoff, and will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 10 to host Bates at 7 p.m.
