Rochester puts away UNE, 42-21

Statistics

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- After the University of New England football team made it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter of Saturday's non-conference tilt, Rochester used a pair of late touchdowns to defeat the Nor'easters by a final score of 42-21.

Each of UNE's three touchdowns, including Damien Jones' 90-yard kickoff return, came in the second half. Rochester's ground game, powered by Daniel Papantonis' 124 yards on 22 carries, was among the catalysts for the Yellowjackets. Rochester finished the game with 263 total rushing yards, averaging an even four yards per carry, while UNE mustered 66 yards on the ground with the average rush going for less than two yards.

Chris Lang racked 176 yards passing, completing 14 of his 25 attempts, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Anderson. Rochester quarterback Creighton Wise threw for under 100 yards, but two of his nine completions were Yellowjacket touchdowns. Spencer Sherck intercepted Wise in the third quarter and now has a pick in back-to-back games.

The Nor'easters found themselves in a 14-0 hole at halftime, but kickstarted their offense with a 72-yard touchdown drive on their second possession of the third quarter. Trey Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, but Jones had the answer on the next kickoff with a touchdown of his own.

With UNE quickly back within one score, Jake Adelmann ran 41 yards for a Rochester touchdown midway through the third quarter. The Nor'easters, set up at the Yellowjackets' 9-yard line, needed just two plays – both handoffs to Jones – to find paydirt and once again come within a touchdown.

Two more Rochester touchdowns in the game's final eight minutes sunk the Nor'easters.

UNE is back at Blue Storm Stadium for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 5, hosting Dean at 1 p.m.
