FITCHBURG, Mass. – Early goals by
Bruno Correia and
Ronan Donaghey, along with a seven-save shutout from
Sean McCarthy, helped the University of New England men's soccer team earn a 2-0 road win over Fitchburg State on Tuesday evening.
Correia scored for the Nor'easters (3-3-2) in the second minute and Donaghey followed suit in the fourth minute. The Falcons (3-4-2) recorded five of their seven shots on goal in the second half, but were unable to break through against McCarthy's strong play between the posts.
First-year Correia netted his third goal of the season on the first shot attempt of the game, and has now scored in back-to-back matches, having tallied the game-winning goal in UNE's conference-opening victory at Nichols on Saturday. His three goals on the season have each come in the Nor'easters' three victories.
Haukur Karlsson's pass setup Donaghey with a high-percentage look from just a few yards out, helping the sophomore score his first collegiate goal just over two minutes after Correia's early strike.
McCarthy's shutout was the first of his career and his seven saves were good for a new season high. Fitchburg State threatened early in the second half, but McCarthy answered the call with back-to-back saves just seconds apart during the 46th minute.
Riding the momentum of back-to-back wins, the Nor'easters will visit Suffolk as they return to Conference of New England action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m.
