DUDLEY, Mass. -- Junior captain
Karley Belisle scored in the 80th minute to give the University of New England women's soccer team a 2-1 road victory over Nichols College in the inaugural Conference of New England (CNE) match Friday afternoon (Sept. 20) at the Nichols Soccer Field.
The win was the 12th consecutive triumph for UNE over the Bison, with its last setback versus Nichols coming in 2010. The Nor'easters improved to 5-3-0 overall, while Nichols slipped to 3-3-2.
Belisle put forth an impressive individual effort in scoring the game-winner, taking the ball away from a Nichols player in the midfield area before taking several touches and depositing a rocket from long range just under the crossbar.
After a scoreless first half, UNE got on the scoreboard with 57:09 elapsed when
Lizzie Frattaroli headed home a cross by
Tori Keyes for her 20th career goal. The duo of Frattaroli and Keyes have combined for nearly half (11) of the Nor'easters' 23 scores on the season. Frattaroli's tally gave her 20 goals for her career.
The hosts drew even less than two minutes later on an unassisted goal from Falyn Hunt.
The Nor'easters held a slight advantage in both shots (21-17) and shots on goal (12-10).
Anna Flaherty totaled a career-best nine saves to record the victory, while Saige Frazier finished with 10 for Nichols.
UNE returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 25) with a home match versus Emerson College. Kickoff at Barbara J. Hazard Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
