STANDISH, Maine -- Fueled by 12 kills apiece from
Viktoria Pavlyuk and
Ellijah Hanley, the University of New England women's volleyball team got past Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-0 (25-23, 30-28, 25-19) on Wednesday night (Sep. 11) at the Alfond Center. The Nor'easters now stand at 6-0 for the second time in program records, dating back over 27 years.
It was UNE's second straight-set victory over the Monks (1-7) during the young campaign, though much more contested than the August 30 opener.
The visitors needed six of the last seven points in the 1st frame to get out in front. Three kills by Pavlyuk and the first of three solo blocks from
Kailyn Reilly were key in the spurt. Pavlyuk had half of her dozen kills in the period.
In the 2nd, which had 10 ties and six lead-changes, the Nor'easters rebounded from a 6-1 deficit only to fall behind again at 20-15. UNE then surged ahead with nine in-a-row (24-20), but still had to fight off one set point against (25-26) before eventually squeaking out the stanza in extra time. Hanley accounted for nine winners during the set.
After surviving the pair of two-point set wins, UNE never trailed in the 3rd. From 6-all, the Nor'easters gradually stretched the advantage on the way to sealing the match.
Backing up Pavlyuk and Hanley on the attack was
Hannah Nowell, who contributed six kills.
Kassidy Bradshaw added 14 digs to her 31 assists for a double-double. On the defensive end,
Kelsey Bradshaw led the squad with 19 digs; Hanley with 15 and
Mina Regnery with 13 were the others to reach double figures.
Addie Miller chipped in with four service aces.
For Saint Joseph's, Mia Gorham tallied eight kills and Riley Greenley put up 13 assists. On the back end, Maggie Sylvester racked up 21 digs, while Allison McMulen supplied 13 more.
The Nor'easters will look to keep their streak alive on Saturday at Bridgewater State University. UNE first squares off with Salve Regina University, and then takes on the host Bears.
