Maine Maritime edges UNE, 3-2

CASTINE, Maine — Kirra Magana scored her second goal of the day just 16 seconds after the University of New England tied things up in the second half, and Maine Maritime Academy held on for a 3-2 decision on Sunday afternoon.

UNE's Tori Keyes second score of the contest tied the game at 2-2 in the 59th minute, but it was only moments before Maine Maritime got the game-winning goal off the foot of Magana at the 59:04 mark.

The Mariners (1-1-0), the defending North Atlantic Conference champions, gained an early lead in the 21st minute behind Mayako Brown's goal before Keyes netted the equalizer for UNE (1-1-0) in the 24th minute. Magana reclaimed the lead for Maine Maritime in the 33rd minute as the Nor'easters entered halftime facing a 2-1 deficit.

Trailing 3-2 in the final 30 minutes of the game, UNE goalkeeper Anna Flaherty made five of her seven total saves to keep the Nor'easters within striking distance. Kylie Curtin's 86th-minute shot represented one of UNE's final scoring opportunities and was saved by Maine Maritime's Isa Thesing, who totaled five saves.

The Nor'easters are on the road once again on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for a 4 p.m. meeting with Southern Maine. They will return home on Sunday, Sept. 8 to host Westfield State at 2 p.m.
