Nor'easters fend off Maine Maritime, 3-2

CASTINE, Maine -- After going up by two sets, the University of New England women's volleyball team needed a 7-2 stretch in the middle of the 5th to secure a 3-2 victory (27-25, 25-15, 19-25, 23-25, 15-11) over Maine Maritime Academy at Smith Gymnasium on Saturday morning (Aug. 31).

The Nor'easters (2-0) ended a six-match skid versus the Mariners (1-1) with the result, during which UNE captured just a couple of sets.

The visitors overcame an 8-2 run in the latter half of the initial stanza but still faced a set-point against when Kailyn Reilly followed up a kill with an ace (25-24). After a kill and an error by MMA, Ellijah Hanley won the frame for the Nor'easters. UNE then ran off nine unanswered in the middle of 2nd to take control, and capped it with another five straight.

Maine Maritime did not trail in the 3rd, and finished with the final four points of the 4th to extend the match further.

UNE led 10-8 in the 5th before a pair of kills from Viktoria Pavlyuk, one each by Reilly and Hanley, and an ace from Addie Miller put the hosts away.

Hanley topped the winning squad with 16 kills, and Pavlyuk contributed 11. Reilly and Kendall Gallaugher went for 10 and five, respectively, without making an error. Kassidy Bradshaw, who registered a career-best 37 assists, also collected a match-high 13 digs.

The Nor'easters accumulated 18 service aces, of which Hanley had five aces. Reilly added four, and Miller, along with Mina Regnery, tacked on three. On the back end, Miller came next with 11 digs, and Hanley supported with eight.

For the Mariners, Sydney Williams, Sam Urch, and Ally Hadley totaled 16, 12, and 11 kills. Hadley put up a triple-double, also with 14 assists and 10 digs. Katie Albritton had 26 assists.
