UNE sweeps SJC to start new season

CASTINE, Maine -- Viktoria Pavlyuk notched 16 kills to go with nine digs as the University of New England picked up a 3-0 women's volleyball win (25-16, 25-15, 25-11) over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the season-opener Friday evening (Aug. 30) at Smith Gymnasium on the campus of Maine Maritime Academy.

Pavlyuk had 10 more winners than any other player in the match. Ellijah Hanley and Arden Caley were next for the Nor'easters (1-0) with six kills apiece, and the pair combined for a .346 hitting percentage.

Hanley also led UNE's success from the service line, accounting for four of the team's 14 aces, while Addie Miller and Kassidy Bradshaw each added three. Miller topped the match with 15 digs, and both Hanley and Bradshaw saved 11 digs. Additionally, Bradshaw framed 25 assists to help fuel the attack.

The Nor'easters limited the Monks (0-1) to an attack rate of -.019 in the contest. Maggie Sylvester and Larisa Comolli had four kills to lead SJC, which received 10 digs from Jessica Christman.

On Saturday, UNE will face MMA at 10 a.m. and then the University of Southern Maine at 2 p.m.
