GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine defeated the University of New England with scores of 12-8 and 8-0 (5 innings) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday (Apr. 2) at USM Softball Stadium.
The Huskies (11-3) received five hits and five runs batted in out of Abigail Miner, who was seeing her former team for the first time. Three of the hits were for extra bases; over the last two seasons with UNE, 42 percent of Miner's 95 hits had went for at least a double.
Madi Day also had five hits and three RBI for USM, while Rona Scott tallied four hits on the day. Makena Mulcahy touched home plate four times. Lexus McIntosh picked up the shutout in the nightcap.
For the Nor'easters (4-12),
Emma Michaud and
Olivia Howe each had three total hits. Michaud has hit safely in eight consecutive games and reached base in 15 straight.
Day went 4-for-4 for the Huskies in
GAME 1 (USM 12-8), scoring three runs with two RBI. Miner and Mackenzie Renner each drove in three runs.
It was 2-0 in favor of the hosts when UNE found four runs in the top of the 3rd. An RBI-double by Howe, a two-run triple from
Grace Tutt, and a wild pitch flipped the visitors in front.
But the lead was short-lived, as Southern Maine responded with five in the bottom of the frame. Three hits and two walks set the stage for a bases-loaded double by Renner.
A three-run homer by Miner made it 11-4 in the 5th, but the Nor'easters bounced back with four in the 6th to trim the deficit to three.
Jaiden McKenna,
Hannah Lappin,
Elise Connor, and
Becca Dumont had runs batted in during the stanza. UNE left two on in the 6th, though, and stranded a leadoff hit by Michaud in the 7th.
Michaud, Howe, and Dumont recorded two hits for the visitors.
Delaney Whitten joined Michaud, Howe, and McKenna with hits off of McIntosh in
GAME 2 (USM 8-0), but they were spread out across four separate innings. McIntosh issued three walks and struck out four.
Already with a 3-0 lead after one run in the 2nd, Miner added a single to drive in two more; Miner was the only player in the contest with multiple hits, going 3-for-3. The Huskies totaled six RBI and scored five earned runs against UNE's
Liv Arvidson, who took the setback in the circle.
