BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England softball team scored five times in the 4th inning of game two to overtake Roger Williams University on the way to an 8-7 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory at Nor'easter Diamond on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 7). The Hawks had taken game one of the doubleheader by a 6-0 margin.

With the results, the Nor'easters (5-13) and Roger Williams (10-10) both settle at 1-3 in league outings.

Emma Michaud extended her streak of reaching base to 17 games for UNE, which is scheduled to entertain Bowdoin College in a non-conference twinbill on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).

For the Hawks, Taylor Howell totaled five hits and five runs batted in on the day. Jaime Wells notched four hits with three RBI, and Shannon Starratt had three hits.

The Nor'easters rebounded immediately from yielding the opening run of GAME 2 (UNE 8-7) by plating three in the bottom of the 1st inning. It was 1-1 when Delaney Whitten lined a one-out double into center field, knocking in a pair.

A walk, four singles, and a passed ball had the visitors ahead in the 3rd, 4-3, shortly before a two-out, two-RBI double from Maeve Brannigan gave Roger Williams a five-run frame and a 6-3 advantage. With two away in the 4th, one of the game-high three hits out of Kelsey Burr added to the spread.

But UNE rallied during its next turn on offense to edge in front, as 10 batters stepped up to the dish. Along the way, an RBI-single by Hannah Irons, an RBI-double from Michaud, and another run-scoring hit by Whitten tied things up at 7-all (in addition to a passed ball), and then a Hannah Lappin sacrifice fly brought in Grace Tutt for the go-ahead tally.

Making her third pitching appearance of the year, Cat Higgins entered for UNE in the top of the 5th and scattered one hit and one walk to secure the three-inning save, which included a seven-pitch 7th that was capped by a strikeout looking. Kara MacDonald was the pitcher of record after 1 1/3 innings of action and collected her first win of the season.

Joining Whitten with two hits was Irons and Olivia Howe, while Michaud, Irons, and Tutt each crossed home plate twice. The Nor'easters capitalized on nine free passes issued by RWU pitchers, including three drawn by Elise Connor.

For the Hawks, Howell and Starratt contributed two hits to the squad's 10 in the contest. Howell drove in two runs, and Starratt scored two. Reliever Natalie Lundari took the loss without retiring any of the three batters she faced; Raegen Germano worked 2 2/3 scoreless the rest of the way, fanning four.

Germano tossed a complete-game shutout in GAME 1 (RWU 6-0), striking out 10 while allowing two hits and four walks.

The Hawks' lineup provided support right from the jump with three runs in the 1st inning. A two-run double from Howell put a pair on the board, before Wells tacked on an RBI-single. UNE had the bases juiced with one gone in the bottom of the stanza, but could not break through, and then an RBI-single by Howell made it 4-0 in the 2nd.

Howell and Wells registered their third hits of the match in the 6th; Howell scored on the Wells single to increase the gap to six.

Tutt and Emma Koenig had the hits for the hosts. Mo Kinsella took the setback in the circle after five innings of work.
