MILTON, Mass. -- After seeing a late 3rd-quarter cushion of five reduced to just one, Curry College managed to hold on for a 7-5 result against the University of New England men's lacrosse team in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match at Katz Field on Tuesday night (Apr. 2).
Starting at the tail end of the 1st period, the Colonels (3-8, 1-1 CCC) had scored five unanswered to take a 6-1 lead. Brody Dalzell put the hosts in front for good with 2:35 left in the opening frame, and then made it 3-1 15 minutes later. Goals from Sean Young and Dom Cerone inside the final minute of the 2nd bumped the margin to 5-1, and Cerone struck again at the 4:47 mark of the penultimate quarter to increase the gap.
However, a man-down tally from
Collin Jackson just 52 seconds later gave the Nor'easters (3-9, 0-3) their first score in more than 30 minutes and so began the rally bid.
Ean LaRochelle got on the board less than one minute after Jackson, and, with two goals in 86 seconds,
Andrew Lawrence sliced the deficit to 6-5 with 8:44 remaining in the 4th.
Dalzell notched his third goal with 4:42 on the clock, only to see UNE's
Ben Gowell win the ensuing faceoff, but Curry forced turnovers on the last three possessions for the visitors to run out the time.
Young and Kyle Bouley combined for nine caused turnovers and Liam O'Neill made seven saves to help secure the decision for the Colonels.
Gowell, who went 9-of-16 in faceoffs, had a game-high seven ground balls for the Nor'easters.
Stephen Fogarty accounted for the other goal.
Evan Hazard notched 13 saves defending the cage.
UNE is slated to visit Nichols College on Saturday.
