BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Hannah Irons delivered an RBI-single in the bottom of the 9th inning of the nightcap to give the University of New England a 3-2 victory over the University of Maine-Farmington in softball action Monday (Apr. 1) at Nor'easter Diamond. The Beavers finished strong to take the opener of the doubleheader, 7-5.
The Nor'easters (4-10) get right back to work on Tuesday, heading to the University of Southern Maine for games that were originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday. UMF now stands at 7-5 on the season.
Five players between the teams recorded hits in both contests.
Hannah Lappin had three hits and three runs batted in on the UNE side -- after coming back from Florida with two hits, she's gone 5-of-11 with four doubles. Two each came from Irons and
Emma Michaud, who has reached base in 13 consecutive outings.
For the Beavers, Maddie Pike had three hits and three RBI on the day; Abby Wrinn also had three hits.
Singles by Wrinn and Pike gave the visitors an early lead in
GAME 2 (UNE 3-2). UMF stranded a pair in both the 1st and 2nd while looking for more, before UNE's
Liv Arvidson settled in for 5 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Farmington starter Melissa Mayo yielded just one hit to the hosts in each of the first five frames.
A couple of two-out singles prompted Arvidson's exit in the 6th, and, while an immediate passed ball moved the runners into scoring position, a liner snagged by
Abigail Prokey in right field ended the threat
[Watch]. Then,
Delaney Whitten bounced a double over the fence to lead-off the bottom of the inning, and that signaled the end of Mayo's day. Two batters later, Lappin did the same to tie things up at 1-1
[Watch].
The Beavers got one run in the 8th on a wild pitch, only to see Lappin answer with a two-out RBI-single
[Watch].
In the 9th, UMF had runners at first and second with no outs, but couldn't advance any further thanks to Irons at shortstop. After collecting a soft liner for the first out, the rookie fielded a grounder, hustled over the touch second base, and fire over to first for the inning-ending double play
[Watch]. Then, UNE's placed runner moved over to third base on a sacrifice, and Irons wasted no time slicing a drive around the center fielder for the walk-off win
[Watch].
Whitten and
Becca Dumont joined Lappin with two hits in the game for the Nor'easters.
Cat Higgins, who saw her first action in 54 weeks during the opener, did not allow a hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory in the circle.
Wrinn and Bella Miller supplied two hits apiece on the other side.
UMF scored a run without a hit to kick off
GAME 1 (UMF 7-5), but UNE had a 3-1 lead by the end of the 2nd inning.
Grace Tutt led off with a double and scored on an RBI-double by Lappin. Both squads plated two more in the 3rd (5-3 UNE), included run-scoring doubles by Pike and Tutt for their respective teams.
Katie Morse came through with a two-run double with two away to level the score in the Beavers' 5th. Wrinn's lone hit of the match, to go with three walks, was a two-out double in the 6th to slip Farmington in front (6-5). Morse padded the slim lead with a groundout in the 7th.
Mack Bergen allowed just two baserunners over the final four innings to get the complete-game decision for UMF. Pike finished with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored for the offense.
Tutt topped all players in the game by going 3-for-3 at the dish.
Mo Kinsella took the setback for UNE in six innings of work; her five strikeouts were the most of any pitcher on the day, and she drove in one run from the batter's box.
