WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College utilized late-inning scoring to clip the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader, 6-5 and 11-7, on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 27).
The Fighting Scots (6-12, 2-0 CCC) overcame a 5-3 deficit in the latter stages of the opener, and then plated six in the bottom of the 6th to break up a tied contest in the nightcap. The Nor'easters slip to 3-9 overall (0-2 CCC) ahead of Monday's (3 p.m.) non-league twinbill versus the University of Maine-Farmington.
Emily Peterson had five hits and scored four runs on the day for the hosts, while Jayden Johnson supplied four hits and five runs batted in. Ami Rivera totaled three hits and four RBI.
On the UNE side,
Hannah Irons,
Emma Michaud, and
Fiona Casey each tallied three hits.
The Nor'easters gained a 3-0 edge in the top of the 3rd inning of
GAME 1 (GC 6-5) with a two-out RBI-single from
Grace Tutt and a two-run double by
Mo Kinsella. While the Scots got two back with three hits and an error in the last half of the frame, Michaud made it 4-2 in the 4th with a two-out RBI-single.
Doubles from Gordon's Morgan Passolo and Peterson in the 5th cut the margin to one, only to see Irons double-home
Jaiden McKenna in the 6th and make it 5-3. McKenna joined Irons and Michaud with two hits in the game, and also scored twice.
A solo shot by Maya Harris in the 6th drew the hosts within one once again, before three hits and a walk-off single by Johnson in the 7th provided the result.
Passolo picked up the win in relief of Emily Graham, who went 5 1/3 with six strikeouts. For UNE in the setback, Kinsella also fanned six.
The home squad got off to a quick start in
GAME 2 (GC 11-7), turning six hits into five runs during the 1st inning. A two-run single by Rivera, double from Johnson, and singles by Graham and Abby Murray plated Gordon to the early lead.
That spread held until the 5th when the Nor'easters trimmed it to 5-2, including back-to-back doubles by
Hannah Lappin and Irons (RBI). Then Lappin came through with a clutch crack in the 6th -- a three-run double to knot the score at 5-all. Touching home on the play was
Delaney Whitten, who led off the stanza with her second hit of the match (double).
However, with two away in the bottom of the inning, the Fighting Scots took control right back. Isabella Rivera had a two-run triple and scored on the next play, a single from her sister. Two batters later, Johnson delivered a three-run homer to increase the cushion to 11-5.
Elise Connor and McKenna knocked in runs for UNE in the 7th.
Graham got the pitching win in relief (1 2/3) with three more strikeouts. Starter
Kara MacDonald took the loss for the visitors.
