BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Wentworth Institute of Technology booked an 11-6 decision against the University of New England to kick off the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse schedule at Blue Bolt Field on Wednesday night (Mar. 27) in the rain.
The Leopards (8-2, 1-0 CCC) yielded the initial goal to the hosts, but netted five of the next six to move in front. The last score of the half made it 6-3 in favor of the visitors, before two man-up goals in the 3rd period stretched the gap to 8-3. While UNE had reduced the deficit to three (8-5) by the 3:36 mark of the 3rd, WIT tallied three more to take control.
Shot attempts were 57-24 for Wentworth, after Connor Charron won 17-of-18 faceoffs and collected 14 ground balls.
Drew Bouley and Colin Ocampo each scored three times for the Leopards, while Tyler Longo and Kobi Buffa added two apiece. Jake Rocchio had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Tom Gardner made five stops defending the cage.
For the Nor'easters (3-8, 0-1),
Shea Fogarty notched two goals.
Andrew Lawrence had three points on a goal and two helpers.
Sam McGregor, seeing his first action in three weeks, supplied one goal and one assist.
Evan Hazard turned in 13 saves for the home side, and
Chris Gottlieb supported with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
UNE stays in Biddeford to face Roger Williams University on Saturday (1 p.m.).
