BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy scored the last four before halftime and traded goals the rest of the way to secure a 9-7 men's lacrosse result against the University of New England at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 2).

Joe O'Keefe had the Nor'easters (1-4) ahead at 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, before Sam Nichol and Alex Stevens put the Mariners (1-0) in front for good. Brendan Reddington and Stevens then struck with 1:45 and 1:33 left in the 2nd quarter, respectively, to bump the cushion to 6-3 at the midway point. MMA goalie Garrett Ruszkowski made more than half of his saves in the 2nd (9) to limit UNE to one score in the frame.
Three was the largest spread of the contest, and Maine Maritime had the eventual answer after each UNE goal in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The Nor'easters were hampered by seven penalties during the closing 30 minutes, which led to a man-up goals for the Mariners at 8-5 (2:19 of the 3rd) and 9-6 (5:52 of the 4th).
Stevens totaled three goals to pace MMA, with Nichol adding two goals and two assists. Reddington also scored twice, and Finn O'Donnell scooped up six ground balls. Ruszkowski posted 17 stops defending the cage.
On the UNE side, Fogarty registered a game-high four goals and five points.
Andrew Lawrence wound up with two scores and three caused turnovers.
Chris Gottlieb also notched three caused turnovers to go with six ground balls.
Ben Gowell continued a strong start to the year in the faceoff department, winning 14-of-20 and collecting 11 ground balls.
Evan Hazard logged 14 saves.
The Nor'easters hit the road on Wednesday to take on Colby College.
