KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The University of New England softball team plated five runs over its last two at-bats to rally past Meredith College (N.C.), 5-3, and close out the busy opening week at The Spring Games.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the 3rd inning, the Nor'easters (3-7) pulled even with two outs in their half of the 5th. A walk and single by
Hannah Irons loaded the bases, along with pinch runner
Abigail Prokey (from the leadoff single by
Emma Koenig).Â
Emma Michaud then came through the a two-run single to center to tie things -- her fourth multiple-RBI game of the 10-game trip.
Relief pitcher
Mo Kinsella worked a 1-2-3 inning to retire Meredith in the 6th, and then UNE struck quickly in the bottom of the frame to move in front.
Grace Tutt walked and scored the go-ahead run when
Abby Walsh laced a double into left. The Angels eventually needed a bases-loaded force at home plate for the second out of the inning just to keep the deficit at three (5-2).
A hit-by-pitch, walk, single, and error netted one run for Meredith in the 7th, but Kinsella got the next two outs to seal it and improve her record to 3-1 on the young season.
Liv Arvidson received a no-decision after five strong innings.
Michaud accounted for two of UNE's five hits, and has reached base in nine straight contests.
For the Angels (9-7), Lillie Davis struck out seven in the loss. Emilee Lewis had three singles, drove in one, and scored once. Avery Puryear and Sarah Manis each had run-scoring hits.
