McGregor, Lawrence power UNE past USM, 18-10

Statistics

GORHAM, Maine -- Sam McGregor dialed up seven goals, and Andrew Lawrence set the program single-game record with 12 points, to guide the University of New England to an 18-10 men's lacrosse triumph at the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at Hannaford Field.

McGregor's output was the highest since Alex Zadworny set the school record of eight goals early in the 2018 season, and matches three others with seven from 2016, 2014, and 2007.

Lawrence, who fed McGregor four times, amassed four goals and eight assists. The 12 points surpasses the 10 that UNE Hall of Famer Dan Auger registered twice in back-to-back years; the first time, in 2016, it included eight assists, which had been two clear of the next highest game total until Lawrence claimed a piece of the mark on Wednesday. Lawrence also became the 14th player in known program history to surpass 100 career points with the performance.

While the Huskies scored first, two by Shea Fogarty gave the Nor'easters a lead they would not relinquish. McGregor then notched six of UNE's next nine as the visitors went into halftime with a 12-3 advantage.

Fogarty dished out three assists to finish with five points. McGregor, Lawrence, and Fogarty all collected five ground balls in the contest, behind only the 10 of Ben Gowell, who won 17-of-23 faceoffs to keep the pressure on the Southern Maine defense.

Connor Gaughan put up 13 saves over 50 minutes of action for his first collegiate decision. Chris Gottlieb supported the defensive effort for UNE (1-3) with three caused turnovers.

Nick James generated three goals and five points to pace the Huskies (1-1). Addison Dietz made 12 saves for the hosts, and Herb Bryant topped all players with five caused turnovers.

The Nor'easters will be back at home on Saturday (1 p.m.) to face Maine Maritime Academy.
