Panthers start strong in 10-6 win over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Plymouth State University had a five-goal cushion after the 1st quarter and registered a 10-6 men's lacrosse decision versus the University of New England at Blue Bolt Field on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25).

Following the opening score by Crosby Fay, two apiece from Brady Hunt and Alex Hawkom padded the lead for the Panthers (1-0). The visitors limited UNE (0-3) to just three shots, and the hosts had nine turnovers in the during the period.

It was 5-1 at halftime and 7-1 midway through the 3rd. The Nor'easters got as close as four on three occasions the rest of the way.

Despite a very efficient 15-of-18 performance out of Ben Gowell in the faceoff department, UNE was hampered by 33 turnovers in the contest.

Fay and Hunt both finished with three goals for Plymouth State, while Ryan Jones joined Hawkom with a pair. Zach Gilvar recorded team-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Owen McNichols made 10 saves.

Offensively for the Nor'easters, Shea Fogarty totaled five points on three goals and two assists, and added six ground balls. Sam McGregor added two scores, and Collin Jackson had a goal and one helper. On the back end, Evan Hazard turned in eight stops over 50 minutes of action, to go with five ground balls and a team-best two caused turnovers. Connor Gaughan posted two more saves to close it out.

UNE will hit the road on Wednesday against the University of Southern Maine.
