Faye Veilleux buried a three-pointer from the left wing with 16 seconds remaining
[Watch] to give the University of New England women's basketball team a thrilling 61-58 victory over Roger Williams University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Senior Day Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.
Veilleux's game-winner capped a strong performance that saw her finish with 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and pair of blocked shots. Classmate
Jordyn Franzen continued her stellar play, finishing with a game-high 29 points on 11 of 15 shooting from the floor. Franzen nailed seven 3-pointers (on just 10 attempts), and also contributed five rebounds, five assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Franzen, who was honored prior to the game for scoring her 1,000th career point earlier in the week, is averaging 27.3 points per game over her last three contests.
Kaylee Beyor chipped in 10 points and eight boards for UNE (17-6, 12-3 CCC), which kept pace with Western New England University atop the conference standings.
Katie Galligan, Sophia Coppola and Chloe Richardson each scored 16 points to lead the way for the visiting Hawks. Galligan also grabbed a team-high nine caroms, while Richardson dialed up five treys.
Franzen poured in 14 points during the opening quarter to help UNE to a 21-17 advantage. The Hawks dominated the second frame, however, outscoring UNE by a 20-6 margin to open up a 37-27 halftime advantage.
UNE battled back in the third quarter and closed within three (47-44) heading into the fourth, which featured five lead changes.
After Franzen converted from beyond the arc to give the Nor'easters a 56-55 lead with just under two minutes remaining, Richardson responded on the Hawks' next possession with a trey of her own to put RWU back on top (58-56) with 1:24 on the clock.
Beyor converted in the paint to tie the score with 1:10 remaining, and UNE's defense came up with a stop on the ensuing Roger Williams' possession.
After a UNE timeout the Nor'easters worked the shot clock down before Veilleux's clutch game-winner. The Hawks had a pair of three-point attempts in the final 11 seconds, but each was off the mark.
UNE will play its final home regular-season contest Wednesday (Feb. 14) when Suffolk University comes to Biddeford for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
