UNE falls to Golden Bears, 24-6, in CNE action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Ryan Carlson and Matt Lamontagne combined for 234 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and the Western New England defense limited the University of New England to 163 yards of offense as the Golden Bears came away with 24-6 Conference of New England (CNE) football win Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) at Golden Bear Stadium.

In addition to the strong rushin performance, the Golden Bears' attack was fueled by quarterback Brady Lafferty, who completed 19 of 33 attempts for 279 yards and one score.

After a scoreless first quarter, Western New England got on the board a little more than five minutes into the second when Lamontagne broke free up the middle for a 14-yard rushing touchdown. The Golden Bears would take a 10-0 lead intermission on a 25-yard field goal by John Moss with 3:59 remaining.

WNE's advantage remained that way until Carlson scampered 37 yards at the 6:19 mark of the third quarter. The extra point conversion by Moss made the score 17-0 in favor ot the hosts.

The Golden Bears (5-4, 2-2 CNE) extended their lead midway through the final frame when Lafferty hooked up with Callaghan Daskum for an eight-yard touchdown pass.

UNE avoided a shutout less than two minutes later as Chris Lang found Gavin Anderson for a five-yard completion. The Nor'easters were unsuccessful on their ensuing two-point conversion attempt.

The Nor'easters' defense was spearheaded by Nate Reid, who racked up a career-high 13 tackles. Bryant Scali was in on eight stops, while Chris Winslow and Teighan Jeremy were each credited with six tackles. Five of Winslow's were solo, and Jeremy had one for a loss of 16 yards.
