FRANKLIN, Mass. -- University of New England junior
Adrian Torres scored a season-high 28 points but it was not enough as the Nor'easters fell to Dean College, 101-84, in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening (Nov. 26) at Pieri Gymnasium.
Billy Ray Barnes recorded a triple-double to lead the way for the undefeated Bulldogs (7-0), racking up 27 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists. Barnes was 9 of 16 from the floor, 9-for-11 from the free throw line and added three steals.
Dean, which shot a blistering 58.3 percent in the second half, had four other players join Barnes in double digits. Randy Vazquez made 7 of 11 field goal attempts on his way to 17 points, while Greg Farrow (13), Christian Yeates (12) and Frankie Idlett (11) also hit double figures.
Torres converted 12 of his 19 field goal attempts, dished out six assists and added three steals to pace UNE.
Jaelen Jackson scored 17 points, and
Zach Boulay and
Adam Lux tallied 11 apiece.
The Bulldogs, who never trailed in the contest, utilized a 23-9 run over a span of 6:21 early in the first half to grab control of the contest and build a 28-14 cushion. Dean would take a 53-42 lead into intermission, thanks in large part to 16-point, 9-rebound frame from Barnes.
The hosts maintained a double-digit margin the entire way after halftime, with their lead cresting at 20 (82-62) with just over nine minutes remaining.
Dean held a commanding 53-34 rebounding advantage while piling up 14 steals on 20 UNE turnovers.
UNE (2-4) will head to Aroostook County to take on the University of Maine Presque Isle on Sunday (Dec. 1) at 12 p.m.
