PRESQUE ISLE, Maine -- The University of Maine Presque Isle Owls scored 13 consecutive points coming out of the halftime break and cruised to an 84-59 non-conference men's basketball win over the University of New England on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1) at Wieden Gymnasium.
The Owls (5-2) featured a very balanced scoring attack in the win with five players finding double figures. Doug McCalla led the way with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Dwaine Williams and Saquan Carswell each tallied 14. Gilbert Jean Mendez (13) and Akhe McMichael (11)Â also found themselves in double figures for UMPI, which made for than 50 percent (20-for-39) of its field goal attempts in the second half.
For the Nor'easters (2-5),
Adrian Torres scored a team-best 14 points to go with nine rebounds, and
Kha Cao Ra James added 12 points on 6-for-8 accuracy from the floor and grabbed eight boards. First-year
Henry Stewart established career highs with seven points and five rebounds off the bench.
Adam Lux hauled in a season-best 14 caroms to lead UNE in that category.
UNE trailed by nine midway through the opening half but responded with a 19-8 spurt over the ensuing seven minutes to grab a 32-30 lead. Back-to-back layups by Jean Mendez and Carswell put the hosts back on top, and UMPI would never relinquish the lead the remainder of the afternoon.Â
Thanks to their quick start after intermission, the Owls took control of the contest, outscoring UNE 28-9 over the initial 8:26 of the final frame to grab their largest lead of the contest to that point (67-43).
In addition to limiting UNE to 32.4 percent (24 of 74) accuracy from the floor, UMPI held a 56-43 rebounding margin while limiting the Nor'easters to just four on the offensive glass.
UNE will open Conference of New England (CNE) play Wednesday with a date versus Suffolk University. Tip-off time at Coach Beaudry's Court in Biddeford is slated for 7:30 p.m.
