BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Elise Arnold poured in a game-high 20 points to help Emerson earn a 65-46 victory over the University of New England women's basketball team during the opening game of the Cave Classic on Friday night in the Tinsley Center on the campus of Bridgewater State.
The Lions (3-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) opened up a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and didn't look back down the stretch, eventually grabbing their largest lead of 21 in the third quarter. With the win, Emerson punched its ticket to the Cave Classic championship game and will square off with host Bridgewater State. The Nor'easters (2-2, 0-0 CNE) will play Eastern Connecticut State in Saturday's consolation game at noon.
In addition to Arnold's scoring, the Lions were powered by Charlotte Levison's game-high 17 rebounds.
Faye Veilleux was the lone Nor'easter in double figures, finishing the game with 10 points.
Maddy Werner followed with nine, and three different UNE players (
Sydney Jenisch,
Grace Boucher and
Kaia Anderson) pitched in with eight.
After leading 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, hot shooting in the second quarter helped Emerson build its commanding lead. The Lions knocked down eight of their 11 attempts from the field, all while UNE was limited to five points and eventually trailed 34-15 at halftime.
The Nor'easters trimmed the lead to 13 (54-41), the smallest margin since the second quarter, early in the fourth, but five straight points from Arnold quelled UNE's hopes of a much-needed run.
Following Saturday's matchup with Eastern Connecticut State, the Nor'easters return home on Tuesday, Nov. 26 to host Colby at 5 p.m.
