BIDDEFORD, Maine – Curry's dominant rushing attack, powered by more than 250 yards from Montie Quinn, allowed the Colonels to pull away from the University of New England football team, 24-10, on Saturday afternoon at Blue Storm Stadium.
The Nor'easters (3-5, 1-2 CNE) tied the game, 10-10, midway through the third quarter after converting a gutsy fourth-down call with
Chris Lang's seven-yard touchdown pass to
Shane LaPorte (
Watch), but that score was answered on the opening play of the ensuing Curry (3-5, 1-2 CNE) drive when Quinn ran 72 yards for a go-ahead score. Quinn would finish the game with 265 yards on the ground. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, it was a 48-yard touchdown run by Quinn that handed UNE a two-score deficit.
Curry kept UNE's ground game bottled up, with
Damien Jones' 14 carries netting 44 yards.
Nathan Delgado had two carries for 11 yards, and provided the Nor'easters' biggest play of the day when he took a screen pass 53 yards deep into Colonel territory to help guide UNE's lone touchdown drive of the afternoon. Lang finished the game with 219 yards through the air on 17-of-35 passing, with a touchdown and an interception.
With the Nor'easter defense forcing three-and-outs on each of Curry's first two possessions, UNE was first to find its footing on offense when it put together an eight-play, 35-yard drive that ended with a
Jack Niland field goal. The Colonels had a field goal attempt of their own on the next drive, but missed a 45-yarder.
Curry scored its first touchdown early in the second quarter with Michael Moriarty's six-yard pass to Pat Leary, capping off a 10-play, 63-yard drive. Leading 7-3, the Colonels were set up with excellent field position after picking off Lang, but settled for a field goal. The visitors would bring their 10-3 lead into halftime.
Despite UNE's third-quarter touchdown drive, Quinn's long touchdown runs proved to be enough for Curry to take control.
Spencer Sherck racked up a career-high 10 tackles to lead the UNE defense. Adem Kica was a defensive standout for Curry, posting a team-best seven tackles in addition to a sack.
UNE honored 20 seniors prior to the game with Saturday's contest marking the final home game of the season. The Nor'easters are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a trip to Western New England. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
