BIDDEFORD, Maine –
Faye Veilleux scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help lead the University of New England women's basketball team to a 78-58 victory over Anna Maria Saturday afternoon on Coach Beaudry's Court.
Veilleux's performance was good for her eighth double-double of her UNE career and her first of the season. Twenty-eight points was four shy of matching her career high, which was set in an overtime win over Endicott during the 2022-23 season.
The Nor'easters (2-0, 0-0 CNE) held a 38-25 lead at halftime and the Amcats were able to hang around for much of the third quarter, but an 11-2 UNE run that bridged the end of the third and the opening minutes of the fourth quickly handed the Nor'easters a 20-point lead (65-45) by the 8:54 mark of the fourth.
Veilleux was 10-for-19 from the floor and connected on 7 of 8 free throw attempts.
Gabby Soter played a strong all-around game for UNE, contributing 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Maddy Werner scored 12 points and added seven boards nearly matching the same output in each category in the season-opener (11 points, 7 rebounds).
Ella Karavanic established a career best with eight points.
For Anna Maria (1-3, 0-0 GNAC), Marinique Reddin poured in a game-best 23 points, thanks in large part to a 11-for-14 showing at the charity stripe. Kiara Gauthier chipped in eight points.
UNE shot a robust 46.4 percent (26 of 56) from the floor and forced 23 Amcat turnovers to help key the victory.
Next up for the Nor'easters is a 5:30 p.m. road game at St. Joseph's College of Maine next Tuesday (Nov. 19).
