BIDDEFORD, Maine – After leading 1-0 at halftime, the University of New England women's soccer team poured in three second-half goals to leave no doubt of a Nor'easter victory in Wednesday night's 4-1 win over UMass Boston at Hazard Field.
Four different UNE (9-4-0) players found the back of the net, including first-year
Lily Carreiro, whose first career goal was scored in the game's final 30 seconds. Carreiro's tally came fewer than 30 seconds after UMass Boston (8-2-3) dashed hopes of a shutout with a last-minute goal of its own.
UNE's four goals were the most allowed this season by the Beacons, who entered Wednesday night's contest riding a three-game winning streak.
Karley Belisle gave the Nor'easters a 1-0 edge in the 28th minute with an 18-yard rocket, the lone goal of the first half
(Watch). The UNE shots kept coming, eventually totaling 14 shots on goal on the evening, but another wouldn't get past UMass Boston's Isabella O'Connell until the 64th minute.
Lindsey Butler tucked a shot from long range inside the right post to double the Nor'easters' lead
(Watch).
Tori Keyes scored her conference-best 14th goal of the season in the 80th minute, and now has seven goals in UNE's last five games
(Watch).
First-year
Haley Coombs seemed destined for a shutout in her first collegiate start, but the Beacons were able to get on the board with just 58 seconds remaining when Amanda Regan headed home a free kick. Coombs recorded two saves on the night.
Carreiro provided the exclamation point with 30 seconds remaining, collecting a ball from fellow first-year
Marah Walton and sending a 10-yard shot past a diving O'Connell.
Following Wednesday's triumph, UNE will return to Conference of New England action when it hosts Roger Williams on Saturday, Oct. 12 at noon.
