BIDDEFORD, Maine –
Brooke Pierotti notched the game-winning goal in the 74th minute of Saturday afternoon's matchup to lift the University of New England women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Roger Williams.
The shots on goal came early and often for the Nor'easters (10-4-0, 3-1-0 CNE), who totaled 14 on the windy afternoon, but it wasn't until the late minutes of the second half that UNE was able to break through. Roger Williams keeper Coco Marrelli stopped the first 12 UNE shots sent her way, but was unable to fend off Pierotti's point-blank shot from just a few yards out, set up by an initial pass from
Karley Belisle that was redirected by
Lindsey Butler.
The Hawks (6-3-5, 0-1-3) were held shotless down the stretch against a tough UNE defense that recorded its fifth shutout of the season, and has allowed just two goals in its last six games.
Saturday's victory marked junior goalkeeper
Anna Flaherty's first complete-game shutout of her career. She was called upon to make one save, which came in the ninth minute. Total shots sided with the Nor'easters by a margin of 20-4.
UNE is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Wentworth. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
