BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-9) victory over Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday evening at Coach Beaudry's Court, hiking the Nor'easters winning streak to four matches.
UNE (13-3, 1-1 CNE) led wire-to-wire in the first set before overcoming an early deficit in the second, and slammed the door with a dominant third set. After the Nor'easters rallied to claim an 8-7 edge in the second set, the Buccaneers (3-11, 1-0 MASCAC) wouldn't lead again for the remainder of the match.
Ellijah Hanley accounted for a match-high 10.0 points thanks to six kills and four aces, two of which came consecutively during a 6-0 run in the second set. Kailyn Riley,
Hannah Nowell and
Viktoria Pavlyuk each recorded seven kills for the Nor'easters, while
Kassidy Bradshaw racked up 25 assists. Alanys Torres' eight kills for Massachusetts Maritime were a match high.
UNE hit .571 during the first set to cruise to a double-digit victory. A 9-1 run midway through the game handed the Nor'easters an 18-8 lead before
Kassidy Bradshaw's ace ultimately sealed it for UNE.
The Buccaneers raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but UNE's 6-0 run proved to be a difference maker as the hosts eventually grabbed an 11-7 edge. Massachusetts Maritime would climb within two late in the set (23-21), but a Reilly kill and a Buccaneer hitting error ended the match's closest game.
The Nor'easters dominant start to the third set, scoring 14 of the first 16 points, left little doubt of a UNE homecoming sweep. UNE looked to
Arden Caley late in the third, and she delivered five of UNE's final six points, including the match-clinching ace.
The Nor'easters are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for a 6 p.m. matchup at Curry.
