BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England first-year
Haukur Karlsson contributed a hat-trick as the Nor'easters played to a 3-3 draw with Curry College in Conference of New England (CNE) men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Trailing 3-2 with the second half winding down, Curry's Noah Korzeniowski tied the score in the 77th minute to salvage a point for the visiting Colonels (5-8-4, 0-3-4 CNE).
The first half featured plenty of offense, with each team scoring twice and the two squads combining for 13 shots. Curry opened the scoring at the 5:36 mark when Aiden Watts raced in to finish off a Colonel penalty opportunity after UNE's
Triston O'Hagan made a brilliant diving stop on the initial attempt.Â
The Nor'easters drew even a little more than a minute later when Karlsson took advantage of a Curry miscue in its defensive end and put home his fourth goal of the season (
Watch).Â
Karlsson struck again in the 9th minute off a UNE set piece.
Sam Higgins headed the initial service from
Matthew Dewhurst to Karlsson, who was set up at the goal mouth and knocked the ball into the back of the net (
Watch).
Curry tied the score in the 24th minute when Watts converted the Colonels' second penalty opportunity of the afternoon after a UNE defender was whistled for a foul in the box.
Karlsson would finish off his hat-trick early in the second frame, drilling a high, bending shot just inside the left post after Curry had committed a turnover deep in its territory. The hat-trick marked the Nor'easters' first three-goal performance since Callum Heaslewood accomplished the feat during the 2019 season.
Â
O'Hagan finished with 10 saves for the Nor'easters (5-7-4, 2-4-1), who travel to Gordon College on Saturday. Justin Ritz had three stops for Curry.
