BOSTON --
Jordyn Franzen scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter as the University of New England Nor'easters outscored Wentworth Institute of Technology 23-7 in the frame on their way to a 72-54 Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball win Tuesday evening (Jan. 9) at Tansey Gymnasium.
The victory improved UNE's record to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Leopards fell to 2-7 (0-5 CCC).
One of four UNE players in double figures, Franzen continued her stellar play of late, making 8 of 12 shots from the floor and grabbing 10 rebounds to record her third consecutive double-double. Franzen is averaging 18.8 points and 11.3 boards over her last six outings.
Faye Veilleux came off the bench to contribute 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while
Juliana Tracey pitched in 14 points on 5-for-8 accuracy from the field.
Kaylee Beyor finished with 10 points (8 in the 1st quarter) to go with seven caroms.
For the Leopards, Maddy Foster tallied 16 points and Brianna Carroll drained three 3-pointers on her way to 13 points.
Leading 17-16 after one quarter, held Wentworth to 22.2 percent (2 of 9) accuracy from the floor while forcing seven turnovers in the pivotal frame. On the offensive end of the floor, Franzen converted 5 of 6 tries -- including 2 of 3 from distance -- to help give the visitors a 40-23 cushion heading into the locker room.
The Leopards were unable to get the deficit to single digits the rest of the way as UNE saw nine players log 13 or more minutes of court time.
UNE shot a solid 43.8 percent (28 of 54) for the contest while holding a commanding 49-26 advantage on the glass. Wentworth was hampered by a 12-for-27 performance (44.4 percent) at the free throw line.
Next up for the Nor'easters is a showdown with conference-leading Roger Williams University on Saturday (Jan. 12). Tip-off time in Bristol, R.I. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
