Nor'easters sweep Huskies in opener

Statistics

STANDISH, Maine -- Ellijah Hanley and Arden Caley each registered nine kills as the University of New England women's volleyball team kicked off the new year with a 3-0 triumph (25-15, 27-25, 25-13) over the University of Southern Maine on Friday evening (Sep. 1) in a match played at the Alfond Center on the campus of Saint Joseph's College.

Hanley led all players with 10.5 points, and added seven digs. Caley, in her debut for the Nor'easters (1-0), notched a .400 hitting percentage with just one miscue. Viktoria Pavlyuk contributed seven winners, many with the help of Kassidy Bradshaw, who framed 21 assists. Bradshaw also totaled seven points, including four kills and UNE's only two service aces.

Defensively, the squad limited the Huskies to a -.046 attack rate. Addie Miller produced 12 digs, Morgan Lynch supported with nine, and Mina Regnery picked up seven.

Things were close in the 1st set (USM 9-8) until eight unanswered during a Bradshaw service run gave some breathing room. The Nor'easters led practically all of the 2nd until six straight by Southern Maine established a 24-22 edge. The Huskies missed the ensuing serve and Caley knocked down a kill to knot the score at 24-all, and, after exchanging a few points, a USM error and kill from Hanley solidified the UNE cushion.

The Nor'easters had the advantage from start-to-finish in the 3rd stanza.

Brianna Delloiacono had six kills to pace the Huskies (0-1), while Cassidy Weiher recorded 11 assists. Isabella Smith pulled up 12 digs and Sierra Castonguay saved eight more, to go with three aces.

UNE will head back to Standish on Saturday for matches against Maine Maritime Academy (2 p.m.) and Saint Joseph's (4 p.m.).
