BIDDEFORD, Maine – Gabriel Toledo found the back of the net from just outside the box in the closing seconds to lift Maine Maritime Academy over the University of New England 2-1 in a season-opening men's soccer matchup at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Friday night.

The Mariners outshot the Nor'easters during the game but the UNE defense was able to keep the game scoreless throughout most of the first half. Reuben Harrison pushed a loose ball to Hunter Cera for the first goal of the game in the 27th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The advantage didn't last long, though, as Chris Caiazzo headed in a cross from Luke Gould to knot the game 1-1 just under a minute later [Watch]. Alex Woodworth also assisted on the goal, finding Gould on the left side of the box.

The teams remained even throughout most of regulation. But with only seven ticks remaining, Toledo stepped into loose ball and booted it to the back of the net to give the Mariners the victory.

Reagan Moynihan made four saves for the Mariners, who posted a 21-8 overall edge in shots. On the opposite end, Sean McCarthy recorded 10 stops.

UNE is back in action on the road at Thomas on Sunday at 3 p.m.
