Bison hold off Nor’easters, 10-8

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Nichols College saw a five-goal halftime cushion trimmed to one but managed to fend off the University of New England, 10-8, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday.
 
The Bison (7-5, 1-2 CCC) got off to a quick start, scoring the first five goals of the game to lead 5-0 after a quarter. Hunter Ferreira and Cian Keohane each scored twice in the opening period.
 
Jordan White found Ryan Hazard in the opening minute of the second quarter to put the Nor'easters (7-6, 1-3 CCC) on the board. The teams traded tallies the rest of the half. Keohane scored his third of the day for Nichols with 12:47 to go until halftime. Chris Gottlieb answered for UNE midway through the quarter. Ryan Warner added a shorthanded goal to put the Bison in front 7-2 at the half.
 
UNE owned the third quarter. White connected with Shea Fogarty for two man-up goals as the Nor'easters cut the deficit to 7-4 with 5:26 left in the quarter. Finn McCoy added another goal for UNE to trim the margin to 7-5 after three.
 
Hazard brought the Nor'easters within one with his second goal of the day to start the fourth quarter. Jack Ellis put Nichols back up by two at 8-6 only 35 seconds later. Andrew Lawrence responded with an unassisted goal at the 11:06 to bring UNE back within one.
 
The Nor'easter comeback ended there as Ellis and Gillis scored back-to-back goals for the Bison as they extended their lead out to 10-7 with 6:33 to play. Hazard found Lawrence for a goal in the final minute.
 
After being outshot 16-2 in the first quarter, the Nor'easters were able to draw even with the Bison in shots overall at 38 each. UNE held a 26-25 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Colin Gleason and Cole Ventimiglia led the Nor'easter defense with three caused turnovers each. Fogarty grabbed seven ground balls to go with his two goals.
 
Brady Morgan played well in net for Nichols with 18 saves. Alex Thoms had 15 saves for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters are on the road at Endicott on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
