MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Salve Regina University trailed late in the third quarter but rebounded for a 13-10 victory over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse matchup on Saturday.
Daniel Naglieri led the Seahawk offense with four goals. Ryan Reilly and Max Beauchamp chipped in three goals each.
Collin Jackson and
Sam McGregor scored three times each for UNE.
Salve Regina rolled out to a 4-1 lead after a quarter of play. Beauchamp scored twice early to help the Seahawks jump ahead. Jackson put in two goals just 11 seconds apart early in the second to help the Nor'easters climb back into the game.
Jordan White, who finished with a goal and three assists, connected with
Shea Fogarty for a man-up goal with 9:54 to go until halftime to tie the game 4-4. The teams traded shots the rest of the second and an extra-man tally by Naglieri gave Salve Regina a 6-5 lead at the half.
The second half began the same way as put in his third of day to knot it back up with 12:21 left in the quarter. Rocco Mazzei hit Ryan Reilly for a goal at the 9:24 mark as the Seahawks pulled back in front. Back-to-back marks by White and McGregor put UNE in front at 8-7 with 7:09 to play in the period.
Naglieri knotted it up once again 1:39 later and Reilly added his second of the quarter as Salve Regina took the lead back 9-8 after three.
The Nor'easters would never regain the lead. After another by Naglieri extended the deficit to 10-8, Fogarty picked up the ground ball of the face-off and quickly scored to cut it back to one. McGregor added another with 3:16 left to pull UNE back within two at 12-10 after goals by Naglieri and Beauchamp put the Seahawks up three. Maxwell Van Winkle scored the final Salve Regina goal. He finished with two on the afternoon.
Cole Irving and
Cole Ventimiglia each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls for UNE.
Alex Thoms picked up a game-high seven ground balls and had 14 saves. Kein William made 10 stops for the Seahawks.
The Nor'easters await their opponent for the CCC Championship First Round next Saturday.
