MILTON, Mass. --
Kenzie Bessette delivered the deciding run in the 7th inning of the opener and then the University of New England rolled behind the pitching of
Mia Micucci to a doubleheader sweep of Curry College, 3-2 and 8-0 (5 innings), in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 15) at D. Forbes Will Field.
Winners of five straight league games, the Nor'easters (8-18) carry a 5-3 CCC ledger into Sunday's twinbill against Endicott College at home (12 p.m.). The Colonels drop to 11-15-1 overall and 2-6 in league games.
Bessette led the offense with five hits on the day, and
Abby Miner contributed four -- both are sporting seven-game streaks with at least one hit.
Kara MacDonald and Micucci combined for seven strikeouts and just one earned run in the UNE circle.
Hailey King opened the scoring for Curry in the bottom of the 3rd in
GAME 1 (UNE 3-2) with a solo home run inside the left field pole, but the Nor'easters responded with two in the next inning.
Abby Walsh doubled to plate pinch runner
Jaiden McKenna, and then with two outs,
Jamie DuPont connected for another double to drive in Walsh.
The Colonels bounced right back to tie things (2-2) with an unearned run off a sacrifice fly. A two-out triple by Natalia O'Kleasky had the hosts primed to retake the lead, but MacDonald got King to pop out to end the threat.
Bessette's first hit began the 5th, and she stood on second with one away, but was clipped by the ball for an out as Miner's second hit grounded up the middle.
But then Bessette had the opportunity to start the top of the 7th and laced a triple to the wall in left-center, and an error on the relay from the outfield allowed her to race home in-stride with the go-ahead run.
O'Kleasky opened the Curry 7th with her second hit, only to see MacDonald record half of her strikeouts during the next three batters to shut the door. MacDonald fanned four while scattering seven hits and a walk, improving to 4-6 on the year.
Caitlyn Wood took the setback in just one inning of work. Jillian Rogers had five strikeouts through six frames.
The top half of the Nor'easter lineup hardly missed in
GAME 2 (UNE 8-0), accounting for 10 of the squad's 14 hits, seven RBI, and five runs scored. Bessette and
Makenzy Herron each went 3-for-4 and touched home twice, before Miner and
Grace Tutt drove in five between their four hits.
Emma Koenig and
Becca Dumont supplied two hits apiece.
Micucci whiffed three against three hits and one free pass en route to her second positive decision in the circle.
A two-run double from Miner kicked things off prior to the first out of the contest, and Tutt followed with an RBI-single. In the 2nd, Herron (single) and Tutt (single) produced two more runs. Miner (single) then tacked on another in the 4th, before Dumont (double) and Bessette (single) connected with two outs to complete the scoring.
The Colonels got runners into scoring position during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at-bats, but were unable to convert.
Wood pitched the opening inning for Curry in the loss.
