BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Endicott College rallied for a 6-2 result in game one and then secured a 4-1 decision in game two versus the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader at Nor'easter Diamond on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 16).
The Gulls (18-6, 8-2 CCC) received solid pitching performances from Maria Hanchuk and Jaylin Couto, while Lauren Misiaszek had a day-high five hits. The Nor'easters (8-20, 5-5), who had their five-match unbeaten streak in league play brought to a halt, accounted for the next three players in terms of total hits, with four apiece from
Kenzie Bessette and
Makenzy Herron, and three by
Becca Dumont.
Bessette has now hit safely in nine straight contests.
After Endicott stranded the bases loaded in the top of the 3rd in
GAME 1 (EC 6-2), UNE took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single by Herron, scoring Dumont (double) and Bessette (single).
Kara MacDonald kept the visitors off the board until an unearned run in the 5th, when Raven Comtois notched an RBI-single. EC then drew level (2-2) in the 6th; Chloe Shapleigh led off with a double, and a pinch runner soon scored on the second hit of the game from Julianna Roche.
In the 7th, hits by Christina Nowicki, Misiaszek, and Shapleigh filled the bases for Emma DiSilva, who tripled to the wall in right-center to give the Gulls a 5-2 cushion. DaSilva came in with a sacrifice fly two pitches later.
The Nor'easters put the first two (Bessette and Herron) of their last chance aboard with singles, but were unable to advance them any further. Hanchuk recorded two strikeouts in the 7th to bring her total to seven, which went up against eight hits and three walks.
On the other side for UNE, MacDonald fanned two while yielding 10 hits. Herron had a game-best three singles. The hosts nearly an earlier lead (bottom 2nd) off the bat of
Lindsay Joyal, but her deep drive to left field curled fractionally wide above the foul pole.
Couto and UNE's
Mia Micucci worked scoreless through four innings ofÂ
GAME 2 (EC 4-1), until an RBI-double from Katie Watts and bases-loaded walk by Shapleigh in the 5th made it 2-0 for Endicott. The Nor'easters immediately cut the deficit in half, though. Dumont and Bessette started the frame with infield hits, moved forward on a sacrifice bunt, and Dumont scored with a sacrifice fly by
Abby Miner.
The Gulls tallied two more in the 6th. Dani Lear's second hit began the inning, and a two-out triple by Watts brought in a pinch runner. An infield single from Comtois was enough to get Watts home before a rundown ended the stanza.
Couto retired the next five but had to navigate two-out hits from Bessette and Herron before finishing off the bottom of the 7th. Couto totaled six strikeouts while surrendering five hits and a couple of walks.
Micucci allowed one earned run in 4.2 innings, and was tagged for seven of Endicott's 11 hits.
Next: UNE is off until Saturday's visit to Nichols College.
